What Makes A Good Roadtrip Playlist?
Let’s set the scene: you and your three best friends are driving down an empty stretch of highway, the top down, great jams blasting, cool wind in your hair…the ideal road trip. All of your worries and responsibilities are set aside, and you can simply relax and enjoy some quality time on the road.
Sounds great, right?
Well, it’s easier said than done. Even if you can fit the trip into your busy schedule, you still need one key element. The roadtrip playlist. But, how do you make the perfect playlist?
Some things are a given, like creating a mix that fits the timeframe. There’s no point in making a three-day-long playlist when your road trip will only take six hours. But, if you want to truly cultivate the best road trip playlist, check out our tips below!
Know Your Audience
There’s nothing worse than spending hours arguing with people in cramped quarters about your musical selection. Especially for long road trips when tempers may already be fraying from being cooped up.
Before you take a road trip with others, make sure that you consult them about their tastes in music. If possible, try to find a genre that you all agree on. Sometimes there isn’t one, but you can organize your playlist to rotate through everyone’s favorites so that one person isn’t hogging the music.
Know Your Locale
Once you’ve met everyone’s tastes, you should consider your locale. It’s always more fun to choose songs about the place you’re going. For example, driving into Istanbul, Turkey, is far better when listening to Istanbul (Not Constantinople) by They Might Be Giants. Rolling into Tel Aviv, Israel isn’t the same if you aren’t blasting Tel Aviv by Omer Adam.
This is crucial if you’re crossing state lines or heading to a big city. Plenty of cities around the world have songs dedicated to them. Cultural landmarks, beaches, and even individual neighborhoods might have songs. Try stepping out of your comfort zone to discover songs about the place you’re going to.
Know Your Driver
While you shouldn’t let your driver completely dictate the music for everyone else, they do need to be able to concentrate on driving, particularly in unfamiliar places. If they are following directions read aloud by a device or a passenger, you may need to turn the music down or off entirely.
Some drivers find it difficult to concentrate on directions with loud distractions. Other drivers need loud music to stay awake in the early morning or late at night during long road trips. Unfortunately, your safety lies in their hands, so you should try to accommodate their needs. It’s always more fun to jam out, but save the rock and roll for long, uninterrupted stretches of the highway instead of backstreets and complicated intersections.
